My Airbnb stay was just OK, here’s why…
I stayed at an Airbnb for a wedding last weekend and well, it was fine. It was clean, updated, Welcome Book and WiFi displayed nicely, simple décor, white linens etc. But I wasn’t exactly wowed.
It was a bit cold and bland really. I sat there and really tried to think about what it was lacking, and decided it was a connection to the local area. We were staying near Wachusett Mountain in a beautiful area with hiking, views, and a lake. The Airbnb did not reflect the local aesthetic. Like at all. There was nothing interesting, comforting or unique about the space.
I started thinking, when you stay at an Airbnb or Hotel location is HUGE. You are visiting a new area and want to feel it. This feeling is part of the overall Guest experience. It is part of what separates the GREAT ones from the just OK ones. And in today’s world, where short-term rentals are becoming more and more popular, you need to be great.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There is a purpose for the standard, clean, simple accommodations – somewhere easy, affordable and predictable to stay for a quick night. But if you have dreams of doing more, you need to dig deeper.
You need to create a BRAND for your property that aligns with your local area. What feeling is the space going to give your guests?
Think…
Colors: what colors align with your exterior environment? Desert – reds, browns, oranges. Lake – blues, greens. You get the idea.
Textures: are you in the mountains? Cozy, fuzzy, warm blankets. On a beach – light, cool linens.
Art and décor: incorporate local mountains, lakes, beaches, businesses, attractions.
Activities: hiking, swimming, fishing, shopping, boating, skiing, relaxation, nature, city life.
Lighting: Bright and Airy. Dark and moody.
But also, be tasteful and subtle so it doesn’t come off too cheesy.
This is the type of stuff that creates a feeling, an experience, a BRAND. Next time you stay somewhere, really take a moment to think about what makes it good, bad, or just OK. It will help you grow as a Host.
That’s all for now folks! Short and simple, right?
